Code: GOV904 Schools Race Equality Webinar for Governors and Senior Leaders

Governors have a responsibility for their school’s compliance with the Equality Act 2010. Race is a protected characteristic under the Act and with global events prompting us to consider issues for Black, Asian and Ethnic Minority (BAME) communities, schools play an important role to help children explore issues such as identity, belonging and culture, as well as prejudice-based bullying and racism.

The Local Authority has updated its Race Equality Guidance for Schools and this webinar is an opportunity to hear about how it can be used in schools.

This 1.5 hour webinar will assist governors to:

  • understand how a whole school approach can promote race equality
  • better support and challenge their schools to engage with race equality

In this webinar, we bring together Dr Yaa Asare, Bola Alysia Ayonrinde and Dr Mandy Curtis to speak about some of the issues explored in the guidance.

Dr Yaa Asare is a senior lecturer at the University of Brighton and a Director of Diversity Resource International (DRI) she will look at the development of identity and belonging in Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic (BAME) children and young people.

Bola Alysia Ayonrinde is a Deputy Head Teacher in East Sussex. She will talk about primary curriculum development and promoting cultural diversity, as well as building pupil knowledge and awareness.

Dr Mandy Curtis is also a senior lecturer at the University of Brighton and is Director of 18 Hours, East Sussex’s Development Education Centre. She will talk about available resources, developing teacher and governor confidence and supporting BAME staff.
