Course description

This course aims to explore the responsibility of the governing body for Health and Safety in their school.

Training objectives

Governors will have the opportunity to review their responsibilities for Health and Safety and consider the need for and benefits of a risk assessment approach to Health and Safety.


You will learn to appreciate the governors' role in monitoring Health and Safety within the context of school improvement and understand the need for effective Health and Safety inspections and audits.

Learning outcomes
.By the end of the course it is anticipated that governors will:


• Be able to monitor Health and Safety effectively in their schools

• Have an understanding of the legal framework and the governing body’s responsibilities

• Be able to promote a culture which recognises that controlling Health and Safety risks is the responsibility of everyone involved in school life.

This course is for Clerks, Governors and Safeguarding Link Governors in East Sussex maintained primary, secondary and special schools; primary, secondary and special academies, independent and free schools.
